TikTok Shadow Ban: How to Tell If You Have One

GustafGustafFounder, Postjam

A TikTok shadow ban is the name creators give to an account whose videos have quietly stopped reaching the For You feed. TikTok does not use the phrase. What it does publish is a rule that matches the experience: an account that keeps posting content unsuitable for the For You feed is made ineligible for recommendation, and its posts become harder to find in search. This guide covers what that means, how to tell it apart from a video that simply did not land, and what TikTok says causes it.

Most accounts that think they are shadow banned are not. A video that stalls at a few hundred views is the normal fate of most videos on TikTok. A restriction looks different, and TikTok gives you the tools to see it.

What a shadow ban means on TikTok

A ban removes an account. A shadow ban, as creators use the word, leaves the account up and the videos posted, but stops TikTok from showing them to anyone who does not already follow you. Your followers can still see your posts. Your profile still loads. The views just stop coming from strangers, and on TikTok strangers are where almost all views come from.

The word "shadow" carries the complaint: the restriction is meant to be invisible. On TikTok, as of October 2026, that part is mostly no longer true. TikTok tells you when an account or a post has been made ineligible, and it gives you a place to check. The rest of this guide uses TikTok's terms where they exist, because those are the terms you will see in the app.

What TikTok actually says

TikTok's Community Guidelines include For You feed eligibility standards. They say TikTok makes some content ineligible for the For You feed because it "may not be suitable for a broad audience", even when the content is allowed to stay on the platform. The same page says two things worth reading twice:

  • A video that misses the For You feed can still be found through search or on your profile.
  • "If a video isn't getting many views, it also doesn't necessarily mean it broke a rule."

The account-level rule is on TikTok's help page Why is my account not being recommended?. If you repeatedly post content that is unsuitable for the For You feed, your account and posts stop appearing there and become harder to find in search. TikTok says it notifies you in your inbox and on your profile when this happens, and that it may restore your account to good standing on its own, depending on how much of your content is unsuitable. Otherwise you can appeal.

So there are two levels:

  1. A post is ineligible. One video is kept out of the For You feed. The rest of your account is unaffected.
  2. An account is ineligible. Every post is kept out of the For You feed, and the account is harder to find in search. This is what most people mean by a shadow ban.

Separate from both are strikes and feature restrictions, which TikTok applies when content breaks the Community Guidelines outright. Those come with a notice too, and TikTok's page on content violations says strikes expire after 90 days (as of October 2026).

Signs your account is restricted

These are the signs that point to a real restriction. Each one is something TikTok shows you, so you can check it rather than guess.

  • An "Ineligible for recommendation" notice under your username. TikTok puts it on your profile when the account is ineligible.
  • An inbox notification saying the same. Look in your inbox notifications, and under System notifications for account updates.
  • A warning in Account check. TikTok Studio has an Account check screen that marks each feature with a check mark or a warning sign. It covers restrictions on logging in, posting, commenting, editing your profile and sending messages.
  • A post marked ineligible in its analytics. TikTok shows the decision in a post's analytics, once analytics are turned on.
  • For You views gone from every post at once. In a post's analytics, the traffic source breakdown shows where views came from. When For You drops to almost nothing on every new post, while Following and profile views hold, TikTok has stopped recommending you.

The test post walks through each of these checks step by step: TikTok Shadow Ban Test: How to Check Your Account.

Signs it is something else

Most drops in views have nothing to do with a restriction. These patterns point elsewhere:

  • One video flopped and the next one did fine. That is the For You feed testing a video with a small audience and moving on. Every account has these.
  • Every video stops at about the same low number. Creators call this 200 view jail. The videos are being shown, the first audience is not watching to the end, and TikTok does not widen the test. TikTok 200 View Jail: How to Get Your Videos Out of It covers it.
  • Videos clear the first test and stall a little later. A video stuck at 500 views has passed one test and failed the next. TikTok Video Stuck at 500 Views: How to Get Past It covers that one.
  • The views come from the wrong country. An account that reaches the wrong market is being recommended, just to people who do not convert. US Targeting on TikTok: How to Set Up an Account From Anywhere covers that.
  • Analytics have not caught up. TikTok's help page on posts that aren't getting views says analytics data may take 1 to 2 days to update (as of October 2026). A post from this morning has not been counted yet.

The difference that matters: in all of these, the For You feed is still sending your videos to people. In a restriction, it has stopped.

What causes a TikTok shadow ban

TikTok's guidelines name the content that is ineligible for the For You feed. The categories that catch ordinary accounts posting every day, rather than accounts posting anything harmful, are these:

  • Unoriginal or reused material. The Integrity and Authenticity section says content is ineligible "if it includes unoriginal or reused material without anything new." Reposting other people's clips, or your own clip downloaded from another platform with its watermark, sits here.
  • Fake engagement and automation tricks. The same section prohibits "automation tools, scripts, or other tricks designed to bypass our systems", and says TikTok may restrict accounts it finds behaving deceptively, which can include limiting their reach in search and the For You feed. Bought followers, bought likes and follow-for-follow schemes fall under it.
  • Content that asks for gifts, likes or follows. The guidelines say content that tries to manipulate people into gifting or inflating likes or follows is not eligible.
  • Content for mature audiences. Sexually suggestive material, some dangerous stunts, extreme dieting and the like can stay up and still be left out of the For You feed.
  • Unverified claims. Unverified information about crises or civic events, and content under review by fact-checkers, is ineligible while it is unverified.

A single ineligible post affects that post. An account becomes ineligible when it posts such content repeatedly. That is why the fix starts with finding which posts TikTok flagged: Fix a TikTok Shadow Ban: How to Get Your Reach Back.

How long a shadow ban lasts

TikTok publishes no fixed length for an ineligible account (as of October 2026). Its help page says it may restore the account automatically "at any time, depending on how much content on your account isn't suitable for the For You feed". That ties the length to what is on your account, which is also the part you control: remove or appeal the flagged posts, and the account has less holding it back.

Strikes are different. They have a published clock: 90 days, after which they stop counting toward a permanent ban.

Figures like "14 days" that circulate on blogs come from creators' own reports, and TikTok has never confirmed one. Treat them as stories.

FAQ

Does TikTok shadow ban accounts? TikTok does not use the term, but it does make accounts ineligible for the For You feed and harder to find in search when they repeatedly post content unsuitable for it. That is the thing people call a shadow ban, and TikTok says it tells you when it happens.

Will TikTok tell me if I am shadow banned? TikTok says it notifies you in your inbox and with a notice on your profile when the account becomes ineligible for recommendation. A single ineligible post shows up in that post's analytics.

Can my followers still see my videos? Yes. Eligibility is about the For You feed and search. Your profile and the Following feed still show your posts to people who follow you.

Does deleting my videos fix it? Deleting the posts TikTok flagged can help, because TikTok ties restoring good standing to how much unsuitable content the account holds. Deleting everything, or deleting and reposting the same videos, does nothing for the cause and loses the posts that were fine.

Is a shadow ban the same as 200 view jail? No. In 200 view jail the For You feed is still showing your videos to a small test audience; the videos are not holding it. In a restriction, the feed has stopped showing them at all.

Recap

A TikTok shadow ban is an account TikTok has made ineligible for the For You feed. TikTok tells you when this happens, with a notice on your profile, an inbox notification and a warning in Account check, and it shows ineligible posts in their analytics. If none of those are there and your videos still get some For You views, you are not restricted; your videos are not holding their first audience. Find out which it is with the test, then work through the fix if it is a restriction, or 200 view jail if it is not.
