Monetize Instagram Reels: How to Qualify and the Followers You Need
You need no followers to post reels on Instagram. To get paid for them, the number depends on which money tool you want, because Instagram has no single "reels monetization" program. As of October 2026, Instagram's help center gives 500 followers for gifts on reels, 1,000 for the Creator Marketplace and 10,000 for subscriptions, and gives no number for bonuses, which are invitation only. Every tool also asks for a professional account, an age of 18 or more and a country where it is offered.
This guide goes through each tool, what it pays for, how to check where your account stands, and the kinds of reels Instagram will not pay for at any follower count.

Do you need followers to post reels?
No. Instagram's help page on reels states no follower minimum to create one. It says reels aren't available to everyone yet, and that you can record and edit videos up to 20 minutes, with reels over 3 minutes not recommended to new audiences. A new account with no followers can post reels today.
Followers only start to matter when you want Instagram to pay you, or when you want a feature like trial reels, which needs 200 on a professional account.
Follower requirements for each way to earn
From Instagram's own eligibility pages, checked October 2026. All need a professional (creator or business) account and an age of 18 or more.
| Tool | What it pays for | Followers needed | Source | |---|---|---|---| | Gifts | Viewers send stars on your reels; Instagram pays $0.01 per star | 500 | Gifts eligibility | | Creator Marketplace | Brands find you and offer paid partnerships | 1,000 (public account) | Creator Marketplace eligibility | | Subscriptions | Followers pay monthly for subscriber-only reels, stories and lives | 10,000 | Subscriptions eligibility | | Bonuses | Instagram pays for reach in a set period | No number; invitation only | About bonuses | | Partnership ads (branded content) | A brand pays you and runs your post as an ad | No number; "a sufficient follower base" | Partnership ads eligibility |
Badges, the fifth tool on Instagram's overview of monetization tools, are for live video rather than reels, and need 10,000 followers (Badges eligibility).
Blogs often give one number, usually 10,000, for "reels monetization". That is the subscriptions number. Gifts open at 500.
Gifts
The lowest bar. Viewers buy stars and send them on your reels, and Instagram pays you a cent per star. You need 500 followers, a professional account, an age of 18 or more and a payout account. Instagram's page excludes collaborative posts and accounts that mostly post content focused on children, and lists the countries where gifts are offered.
Creator Marketplace
A place where brands search for creators to pay. You need 1,000 followers on a public professional account and an age of 18 or more, and it is open in every country where Meta runs ads, with a few exceptions Instagram lists.
Subscriptions
Followers pay a monthly fee for content only subscribers see. You need 10,000 followers and an age of 18 or more, and Instagram lists the countries it is offered in. Instagram's revenue share was 0% as of October 2026; Apple and Google take their fee on in-app purchases (Instagram's page on subscription earnings).
Bonuses
Instagram describes bonuses as a test: specific programs offered to creators by invitation only, for a limited time, in some countries, "with an element of random selection". No follower count gets you one. An invitation shows up in your professional dashboard.
Partnership ads
Partnership ads are what Instagram now calls branded content ads. The brand pays you, and can pay to show your reel to more people as an ad. Instagram asks for "an authentic, established presence" with "a sufficient follower base" and gives no number. If the option is not open to you, the help page says you can request a review.
Can you get paid for views on reels?
Not as a standing program. Instagram has no tool that pays every eligible creator per view. The closest is bonuses, and those go to invited accounts only. If a guide promises a set rate per thousand views on Instagram, it is not describing anything on Instagram's help pages as of October 2026.
Views pay indirectly: they bring the followers that open gifts and subscriptions, and the reach that brands pay for.
The rules every tool shares
Every tool sits on top of two policy pages, and breaking them can close all of them at once.
- Partner Monetization Policies cover the account: an eligible country, following the Community Standards, authentic engagement and a sufficient follower base.
- Content Monetization Policies cover each post: what Instagram will and will not pay for.
Bought followers and engagement trades break the first. The second is where most reels fall down.
Reels Instagram will not pay for
Instagram's Content Monetization Policies name formats that "cannot be monetized". Among them:
- Slideshows of images: content that mostly shows still images one after another.
- Text montages: content that mostly shows images with text laid over them.
- Static and looping videos, and videos with ads embedded in them.
- Unoriginal content: reposts and clips reproduced without meaningful changes.
So a page of text-on-photo reels can grow, reach 10,000 followers and still not be paid for those reels. If earning from Instagram is the goal, the reels themselves have to be original video. Interest Based Marketing on Instagram: How to Grow Organically covers the kind of original reels that grow an account in the first place.
How to check if you are eligible
Instagram shows it in the app. Open your Professional dashboard from your profile; it lists the monetization tools your account can use and whether you are eligible, and it is where bonus invitations appear. Instagram's overview of monetization tools links to the eligibility page for each.
If a tool is missing, check, in order:
- Professional account. Personal accounts cannot use any of these tools.
- Age. 18 or more for every tool.
- Country. Each tool lists the countries where it is offered.
- Account Status. Violations of the Community Standards or the monetization policies show there, and can make you ineligible. Instagram Shadow Ban Test: How to Check With Account Status walks through reading it.
Getting to the number
The follower counts above come from reels that reach people who don't follow you yet. That reach comes from posting original reels often, testing hooks with trial reels, and staying eligible for recommendations. A reel that stalls at a couple of hundred views has a different problem, covered in Instagram 200 View Jail: How to Get Your Reels Seen Again.
FAQ
How many followers do you need to monetize Instagram reels? It depends on the tool: 500 for gifts, 1,000 for the Creator Marketplace, 10,000 for subscriptions, as of October 2026. Bonuses are invitation only.
How many followers do you need for reels? None. Any account can post reels; followers only matter for getting paid and for some features.
Does Instagram pay for reel views? Not to everyone. Bonuses pay for performance, but only to invited creators.
Can I monetize reels with a personal account? No. Every monetization tool needs a professional (creator or business) account.
Why are my reels not eligible for monetization? Check the Content Monetization Policies: slideshows of images, text montages and unoriginal content cannot be monetized, whatever your follower count.
Recap
Posting reels needs no followers. Getting paid needs a professional account, an age of 18 or more, an eligible country and a follower count that depends on the tool: 500 for gifts, 1,000 for the Creator Marketplace, 10,000 for subscriptions. Bonuses are by invitation. Check your Professional dashboard for what is open to you, and post original video, because slideshows and text montages do not qualify at any size.
