Instagram Shadow Ban Test: How to Check With Account Status

GustafGustafFounder, Postjam

The Instagram shadow ban test that gives a real answer is Account Status, a screen in Instagram's own settings. For a professional account, it says whether Instagram can recommend your content to people who don't follow you, shows a sample of anything that broke the Recommendations Guidelines, and lets you request a review. It takes a minute. The manual checks after it are for confirming what it says, or for accounts that cannot see the full screen.

For what a shadow ban is on Instagram and what Instagram confirms about it, see Instagram Shadow Ban: How to Tell If Your Reach Is Limited. This post is the procedure.

Before you test

Use a professional account. Instagram's help page on recommendation eligibility says that if you're using a professional account, you can see in Account Status whether your content may be eligible to be recommended. A personal account sees removed content and features it can't use, which is less. Switching to a creator or business account is free and takes a minute in settings.

Make sure the account is public. The Recommendations Guidelines apply only to public accounts. A private account is never recommended to non-followers, so it has nothing to test.

Open Account Status

The menu path, from Instagram's help page Check your Account Status on Instagram (as of October 2026):

In the app (iPhone and Android)

  1. Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right to go to your profile.
  2. Tap Menu (☰) in the top right.
  3. Below More info and support, tap Account Status.

On a computer

  1. Click More in the bottom left, then click Settings.
  2. Click Account Status below More info and support.

What each part of Account Status means

Account Status groups what Instagram knows about your account. The help pages on Account Status and recommendation eligibility describe each part.

Whether your content can be recommended. This is the shadow ban answer. If it says your content may be eligible, Instagram can show it in Explore, Reels, Feed, Search and Suggested Accounts to people who don't follow you. If it says your content can't be recommended right now, it shows a sample of the post or reel that went against the guidelines and which guideline applies. Eligibility is a floor: Instagram's help page notes that being eligible "doesn't guarantee that your content will be recommended."

Your profile. Account Status can say that something in your profile, like the profile photo or bio, goes against the Recommendations Guidelines. A profile problem limits the whole account, so read this line even if every post looks fine.

Removed content. Posts, stories or comments Instagram took down for going against the Community Standards. These are a separate, stronger action than a recommendation limit, and repeated removals can lead to losing the account.

Features you can't use. Anything Instagram has switched off for your account, with a way to resolve it or appeal.

Request a review. Where you think Instagram got a decision wrong, this is where you ask it to look again.

If the eligibility line says you can be recommended, your profile has no flag, and nothing has been removed, you are not shadow banned in any sense Instagram applies. Your reach problem is the content, and Instagram 200 View Jail is the next read.

Manual check 1: Trial reels

Instagram's trial reels help page says a public account that is ineligible to appear in recommendations loses access to trial reels until it is eligible again (as of October 2026).

So if your account had the Trial option when sharing a reel and it has vanished, that is a sign the account is not eligible. The reverse is not proof: an account can lack trial reels for other reasons, such as being under the follower minimum. Instagram Trial Reels: How to Unlock Them lists those.

Manual check 2: Insights across recent posts

A recommendation limit hits every post at once. A weak post hits one. Insights tell you which.

Instagram's page on insights says you can tap View insights under any post or reel. For posts, stories and lives, the Accounts engaged metric is broken down into followers and non-followers (as of October 2026). For reels, look at Views and Viewers.

Write down the numbers for your last ten posts and ten from a normal month.

  • Engagement from non-followers fell to almost nothing on every post at once, while followers engage as usual: this fits an account that is not being recommended. Go back to Account Status.
  • Some posts are down and some are fine: the posts are the variable. That is a content problem.

Manual check 3: Look from a second account

  1. On an account that does not follow you, open the Reels tab and Explore for a few minutes in your niche. Your posts showing up here means you are being recommended. Their absence proves little, since recommendations are personal.
  2. Search your exact username. If your account does not come up for its own name, look at Account Status again.
  3. Ask someone outside your followers to search for your account by name and open a recent reel.

Treat this check as support for Account Status, never as the answer by itself.

Reading the results

| What you found | What it means | Next | |---|---|---| | Account Status: content can't be recommended | A recommendation limit | Remove it | | Account Status: profile goes against guidelines | The whole account is limited by the profile | Remove it | | Trial option vanished | Likely ineligible; confirm in Account Status | Account Status | | All clear, reels stall at the same low number | Reels are shown and not held | Instagram 200 view jail | | All clear, reach went to the wrong country | You are recommended, to the wrong people | US targeting |

What shadow ban checker sites can see

Sites that offer an Instagram shadow ban check can read only public data: your profile, follower count, and the likes and views on public posts. Some search a hashtag from a logged-out session to see whether your post appears. That tells you about one search result at one moment, which Instagram personalizes and changes all the time.

What they cannot see is the answer itself: your Account Status, which lives behind your login. They also cannot change it. If a site asks for your password to check or remove a shadow ban, it is asking for your account.

FAQ

Is there an official Instagram shadow ban check? Yes, in effect: Account Status. Instagram does not call it a shadow ban check, but for professional accounts it shows whether your content can be recommended to non-followers, which is the thing a shadow ban is.

Why can't I see recommendation eligibility in Account Status? That part is for professional accounts. Switch to a creator or business account in settings, then check again.

Account Status says I'm eligible but my reach is still down. Why? Eligibility only means Instagram may recommend you. Your reels are reaching a first audience and losing it, or reaching the wrong one. Read Instagram 200 View Jail.

How often should I check? When reach drops across several posts at once, and once a week while you are fixing a limit. Checking after every slow post adds nothing.

Recap

Open Account Status from your profile menu, below More info and support. It says whether your content can be recommended, flags your profile if it breaks the guidelines, lists removed content and features you can't use, and lets you request a review. Confirm with trial reels, insights across recent posts, and a look from a second account. A flag means Remove an Instagram Shadow Ban is next; a clean screen means the fix is in the content.
