Instagram Shadow Ban: How to Tell If Your Reach Is Limited
An Instagram shadow ban is the name people give to an account whose posts have stopped reaching anyone who does not already follow it. Instagram does not use the phrase. It uses "recommendation eligibility": an account or a post that goes against Instagram's Recommendations Guidelines can stay up and still be left out of Explore, Reels and the other places Instagram shows content to non-followers. Instagram confirms this, explains the rules, and shows professional accounts their status in Account Status.
This guide covers what Instagram says, the signs that your reach is limited, and what causes it. Checking and fixing each have their own post, linked below.

What a shadow ban is on Instagram
Instagram shows your posts in two kinds of places. Followers see them in their Feed, Stories and on your profile. Everyone else sees them only when Instagram recommends them: in Explore, the Reels tab, suggested posts in Feed, search and Suggested Accounts.
A shadow ban, in the sense people mean, is losing the second kind while keeping the first. Your followers still see you. Strangers stop seeing you. For an account that grows through Reels, strangers are where nearly all the new views and followers come from, so the effect looks like a wall.
What Instagram confirms
Instagram's help page Recommendations on Instagram says Instagram keeps Recommendations Guidelines that "maintain a higher standard than our Community Standards", because recommended content comes from accounts people have not chosen to follow. Content that breaks the Community Standards is removed. Content that only breaks the Recommendations Guidelines stays up and is not recommended.
The help page on recommendation eligibility adds the parts that match what people describe as a shadow ban (as of October 2026):
- If your account is not eligible to be recommended, "none of your content will be recommended", even posts that follow every guideline.
- Even when you are not eligible, your content "can still show up for your followers."
- Professional accounts can see their eligibility in Account Status, including a sample of the content that went against the guidelines and which guideline it was.
- You may be able to request a review.
So Instagram does limit reach without removing anything, it says so, and it shows professional accounts where they stand. What it does not do is call it a shadow ban.
Signs your reach is limited
Each of these is something Instagram shows you.
- Account Status says your content can't be recommended. This is the direct answer. Account Status shows whether your content may be eligible to be recommended to people who don't follow you, and whether something on your profile, like the photo or bio, goes against the guidelines.
- Trial reels have disappeared. Instagram's trial reels help page says a public account that is ineligible to appear in recommendations also loses access to trial reels, and gets it back once it is eligible again. If the Trial option vanished from your share screen, check Account Status.
- Reach from non-followers collapsed on every post at once. Insights show how your posts and reels performed. A sudden fall across every post, with your followers' engagement steady, fits an account that is no longer being recommended.
- A notice that content was removed or a feature is limited. Removal is a different action from a recommendation limit, but repeated removals are one of the things that make an account ineligible.

Signs it is something else
- Reels stall at the same low number, and Account Status is clear. Instagram is still showing them to a first audience that does not stay. That is Instagram 200 view jail, a content problem.
- One reel flopped. Instagram tests every eligible reel on a small audience and widens only the best performers. Most reels never widen. One flop is that system working.
- Your reach went to the wrong country. You are being recommended, to people who will not buy. US Targeting on Instagram covers that.
- Your posts reach the wrong people. Instagram decides who sees a post from what is in it. Interest Based Marketing on Instagram explains how that works.
- Your account is private. Private accounts only reach approved followers, and the Recommendations Guidelines apply only to public accounts.
What causes an Instagram shadow ban
Instagram's recommendations page lists what it tries not to recommend. For a business or creator posting every day, the causes that matter most are these.
Content Instagram will not recommend:
- Unoriginal content "largely repurposed from another source with only minor, immaterial edits, without adding material value."
- Long captions unrelated to the content and coordinated comment networks meant to drive engagement artificially.
- Sensitive or mature content that stays up but is not recommended: sexually suggestive images, violence, regulated products, some health and weight-loss claims.
- False content rated by independent fact-checkers.
Accounts Instagram tries not to recommend:
- Accounts that recently violated the Community Guidelines.
- Accounts that repeatedly put content it does not recommend in their name, username, profile photo or bio.
- Accounts that repeatedly used misleading practices to build a following, "such as purchasing 'likes'."
- Accounts banned from running ads.
- Accounts that repeatedly share content featuring a photorealistic AI-generated person without the AI-generated profile label.
Instagram's creator page on recommendations and originality adds a rule for reposting: accounts that post content from other users that they did not create or materially improve "10 or more times in the last 30 days" are removed from recommendations, and come back only when they drop below that count over a rolling 30 days. The same page says eligible content has "no visible watermarks".
How long it lasts
Instagram publishes one clock and no others (as of October 2026). The reposting rule runs on a rolling 30 days: an account is eligible again once it drops below 10 reposts in that window. For everything else, Instagram's creator page says an account that repeatedly posts content against the guidelines "may be ineligible for recommendation for a period of time", without giving the period.
The part you control is the content: editing or removing what Account Status flags, fixing a profile that breaks the guidelines, and requesting a review where Instagram got it wrong. That is all in Remove an Instagram Shadow Ban: How to Lift It and Keep It Off.
FAQ
Does Instagram shadow ban accounts? Instagram does not use the term, but it does stop recommending accounts and posts that go against its Recommendations Guidelines, while their followers still see them. It says so in its help center and shows professional accounts their status in Account Status.
Will Instagram tell me if my reach is limited? Account Status shows a professional account whether its content can be recommended, with a sample of the content that went against the guidelines. Personal accounts see less there; switching to a professional account is free.
Can my followers still see my posts? Yes. Instagram's help page says your content can still show up for followers when you are not eligible to be recommended.
Do banned hashtags cause a shadow ban? Instagram's Recommendations Guidelines do not mention hashtags. They are about what the content and the account are. A tag on a post that breaks a guideline does not fix it, and a tag on a post that follows them does not break it.
Is a shadow ban the same as 200 view jail? No. In 200 view jail Instagram still shows your reels to a first audience, and the reels do not hold it. With a recommendation limit, Instagram does not show them to non-followers at all.
Recap
What people call an Instagram shadow ban is an account or post Instagram has made ineligible for recommendation. Followers still see it; non-followers do not. Instagram confirms the mechanism, lists the causes in its Recommendations Guidelines, and shows professional accounts their status in Account Status. Check it, then lift it, or if Account Status is clear, read Instagram 200 View Jail.
